Coronavirus spread as quickly as possible around the world. At the moment, there are still countries where not a single case of the disease has been registered, but their number is small. Most states suffer heavy losses due to COVID-19. The lists of infected and those who could not be saved are replenished daily.
There are other effects of coronavirus. Many sectors of the economy suffered, businessmen suffer losses, not all of them can stay afloat. People lose jobs, are left without a livelihood. Of course, the authorities are trying to help those who are in a difficult situation.
Despite the fact that COVID-19 "walked" almost all over the world, some states experienced much more difficulties, where most people fell ill and died from coronavirus. Below is a ranking of the countries most affected by this pandemic.
For reference: statistics of infected and dead are indicated as of May 16.
10. Iran
Infected: 117 thousand
The dead: 6.9 thousand
In early March, Iran was in the top three in terms of the number of infected. The first case was recorded on February 19, the virus spread rapidly across all provinces. Prior to the pandemic, the authorities introduced restrictive measures: schools were closed, all events, including religious ones, were canceled.
Iran, however, like all other states, had to fight not only with the virus, but also with economic problems. The government had to choose: the spread of the disease or the impoverishment of the people, so already on April 11 removed some of the restrictions on certain types of businesses. There were many disagreements about this, but now the situation in Iran is gradually stabilizing. Over the past 24 hours, the minimum number of deaths was recorded (over the past 2 months) - 35 people died. Iranian authorities say they managed to take control of the situation with COVID-19.
9. Turkey
Infected: 146 thousand
The dead: 4.05 thousand
While a pandemic was announced worldwide, the first infected person was found in Turkey on March 11. It turned out to be a man who arrived from Europe. Within a month, Turkey took 9th place in the top countries in terms of the number of people infected with coronavirus. When the growth rate of diseases began to grow exponentially, they introduced harsh measures, up to curfew.
As for the economy, on April 26, authorities announced a recession. On May 4, information appeared that they plan to receive tourists in Turkey in the summer. Of course, while observing all safety measures. Not surprisingly, tourism is one of the most significant components of the economy of this country.
8. Germany
Infected: 176 thousand
The dead: 8 thousand
The first case of infection is January 27th. The virus began to spread, most of the cases came from the ski resorts of Italy. Germany has made great strides in the fight against coronavirus. Yes, she was in the top ten in terms of the number of infected, but the level of deaths is low. The fact is that German hospitals are well equipped. People got the help they needed on time. Now the epidemic in Germany is on the decline.
Minister of Economics Peter Altmayer praised the impact of coronavirus on the economy. According to him, Germany has not been in such a difficult situation since the Second World War. Despite the anti-crisis measures, many enterprises are forced to close.
7. Brazil
Infected: 220 thousand
The dead: 15 thousand
The first positive test for coronavirus is February 26th. Subject to security measures, the country would long ago have reached a plateau. That's just the president of Brazil behaved unusual. Jair Bolsanaru believes the threat of coronavirus is exaggerated. Deputies and local authorities do not agree with this opinion. While the authorities are sorting out which of them is right and which is not, the increase in the number of cases increases every day. Brazil has several times set anti-records, repeatedly leading the ranking in terms of the number of infected.
Even in this situation, local authorities are trying to normalize the country's economic life.
6. France
Infected: 142 thousand
The dead: 27.5 thousand
In France, the coronavirus epidemic began in late January. Time was lost, the authorities did not take any measures, comparing the virus with a common cold. Only in mid-March quarantine was announced, but it was already too late. The numbers speak for themselves - too many dead.
It is too early to talk about stabilization; an increase in the number of diseases is expected in the near future. The government decided to end quarantine, fearing the current economic situation. Authorities say that people should go to work, even despite the virus.
5. Italy
Infected: 224 thousand
The dead: 31.6 thousand
Events in Italy unfolded in a similar scenario. On January 31, two Chinese tourists brought COVID-19 to Rome; at the end of February, the country already closed the top three in terms of the number of cases. The Italians did not feel fear of the coronavirus, they led the same way of life. At the moment, the situation has improved, but so far the fight against coronavirus is not over.
Since May 4, the country has been gradually phased out; most enterprises are returning to their previous regime. In early summer, Italy plans to open borders.
4. UK
Infected: 237 thousand
The dead: 34 thousand
January 31 discovered the first cases of coronavirus. On March 7, restrictive measures were introduced, but they did not help, the virus spread rapidly throughout the country. March 23 measures tightened, introduced quarantine. Soon, Britain overtook and even surpassed Italy. In addition, information appeared in the media that testing in the British territory was not properly established. There is an assumption that the real numbers are much higher.
Since May 11, the country is returning to its former life. The restrictions are lifted, but the authorities are ready for the number of infected people to increase.
3. Spain
Infected: 231 thousand
The dead: 27.6 thousand
Coronavirus entered the territory of Spain in late January. March 13, it was known that there are infected in all provinces of the country. Unfortunately, the Spanish healthcare system was not ready for such a flood of patients. Hospitalized only "heavy."
Not the least role was played by the fact that the Spanish authorities did not prevent the holding of mass events, as well as the lack of mechanical ventilation, tests, and protective equipment for medical personnel. March 16 in the country declared a state of emergency.
It is believed that the Spanish economy was in the most difficult situation compared to other EU countries. According to forecasts, a fifth of the population may be left without work.
2. Russia
Infected: 272 thousand
The dead: 2.5 thousand
In late January, two cases of coronavirus infection were recorded in Russia. Every effort has been made to gain time in preparing medical services. It was possible to restrain the pace of the spread of coronavirus, nevertheless, Russia now ranks second in the number of diseases. But in our country the lowest mortality rate (among those who are in the top ten). Although it is too early to take stock, Russia has not reached a plateau, and a record number of deaths have been recorded over the past two days.
COVID-19 dealt a severe blow to the Russian economy, small and medium-sized businesses were badly damaged. The situation was further complicated by a drop in oil prices and a decrease in demand for Russian exports.
1. USA
Infected: 1.47 million
The dead: 88.2 thousand
Coronavirus began to spread in late January. At first it seemed that the situation was under control. In two months - less than 100 dead. Further, the situation deteriorated greatly. The US healthcare system is very specific - most hospitals are private and independent of anyone. The lack of mechanical ventilation and protective suits for paramedics has done its job. In the United States, they could prepare for a pandemic, but the authorities did not. Procrastination was too expensive. The situation has not yet stabilized, and since March 27, the United States has become the undisputed leader in terms of the number of infected.
The richest country with the largest economy in the world has fallen into depression. Companies are closing, unemployment is rising. Trump promises an “incredible recovery,” but so far these are just words.
